Margaret Juhae Lee is an Oakland-based writer and former literary editor of The Nation magazine. Recipient of a Bunting Fellowship of the Radcliff Institute at Harvard University and a Korean Studies Fellowship from the Korea Foundation, her writings have been published in The Nation, Newsday, Elle, ARTnews, The Progressive, among others.

Starry Field: A Memoir of Lost History (Penguin Random House, 2024) follows Margaret Juhae Lee’s journey uncovering her grandfather Lee Chul Ha’s legacy—branded a communist by Japan in the 1930s, later honored as a patriot in South Korea. Through investigative journalism and oral history, Lee explores Korea’s fractured history amid decolonization and the Cold War.

This event is sponsored by EAC, Department of Asian American Studies, Literature and Mind, and EALCS.
